Last week, Secretary of Interior Kempthorne rejected a proposed off-reservation casino in Wisconsin because the proposed casino was too far of a commute for tribal members and the Tribe had a large reservation which could accommodate a casino. Sound familiar?

The Gorge casino proposal would be a 216-mile round trip for Warm Springs tribal members from their 600,000-acre reservation. The only difference between the Wisconsin proposal and the Gorge proposal? The Gorge proposal is also in the heart of one of the nation's only National Scenic Areas. The Secretary should follow his precedent and deny the Gorge casino proposal.
